What an exciting match and it's only the 4th day of IPL! PBKS posts 243 runs on the board and GT fires the gas to chase that mammoth! Unbelievable thrill at the stadium as Sherfane Rutherford turned on the heat at the death overs. However, Arshdeep kept his calm to take control of the defence and booked the first win for Punjab Kings.
Let's see how things panned out between GT and PBKS at Ahmedabad.
IPL Debutant Priyansh Arya Starts Strong For PBKS
Priyansh Arya provided a blazing start for his team against Gujarat Titans, scoring 47 off just 23 balls at an impressive strike rate of 204.35. His aggressive innings included seven boundaries and two sixes, ensuring the team capitalized on the powerplay.
Partnering with Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer at the top, Arya took on the bowlers from the outset, helping the team race to 79/2 by the seventh over. His quickfire knock laid a solid foundation, allowing the middle order to build on the strong start and maintain the momentum through the innings.
Shreyas Iyer Overshadows Sai Kishore's Crucial 3-Wicket Haul
Interestingly enough, Shreyas Iyer’s explosive 97 off just 42 balls overshadowed R Sai Kishore’s impressive three-wicket haul for GT. Iyer’s blistering knock, laced with five boundaries and nine towering sixes, came at a staggering strike rate of 230.95.
Despite Kishore’s efforts, which included key dismissals of Azmatullah Omarzai, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis, Iyer’s onslaught ensured his team posted a mammoth total.
Adding to the carnage, Shashank Singh played a brilliant cameo, scoring 44 off just 16 balls at a phenomenal strike rate of 275.00, hitting six fours and two sixes. His fireworks in the death overs provided the perfect finish to an already dominant innings.
Sai Sudarshan Gives Fiery Start To GT's Chase; Arshdeep Singh Screeches Brake
Sai Sudharsan gave Gujarat Titans a flying start in their chase of 244 runs, smashing 74 off just 41 balls with five boundaries and six towering sixes at a strike rate of 180.49. Alongside skipper Shubman Gill, who contributed a brisk 33 off 14 balls, Sudharsan stitched together a solid 61-run opening stand.
Even after Gill’s dismissal, Sudharsan continued his attacking intent and built a crucial partnership with Jos Buttler to keep GT in the hunt before he was sent back by Arshdeep in the 13th over.
After Sudarshan's dismissal, Jos Buttler and Impact Player Sherfane Rutherford continued the chase but Arshdeep Singh’s disciplined bowling, combined with tight spells from Glenn Maxwell and Vyshak Vijaykumar, choked the run flow in the middle overs, derailing GT’s momentum where they needed 60 off 24 balls.
Arshdeep Closes Down Win For PBKS As Sherfane Storm Ends With Pain
After Jos Buttler's dismissal in the 18th over, Sherfane Rutherford took charge and kept Gujarat Titans in the hunt with a gritty 46 off 28 balls, hitting four boundaries and three sixes. Despite losing Rahul Tewatia to a run-out early in the final over, Rutherford’s resilience brought GT close to the target.
However, Arshdeep Singh held his nerve under pressure and delivered crucial yorkers to dismiss Rutherford in the penultimate ball of the innings. His calm approach in the death overs ensured that Punjab Kings defended their total successfully, clinching IPL's first win by 11 runs.
