The second T20I between England and New Zealand is in full swing, following the abandonment of the first T20I due to rain. 'Taking matters into his own bat', England’s star opener, Phil Salt, etched his name into an elite six-hitting record book.
Although he has scored 31 runs so far, at the time of writing, with one six and four boundaries, Salt climbed the list of most sixes by an England opener in men’s T20Is.
Salt is only behind Jos Buttler in elite record
Phil Salt now stands at 70 sixes, just behind Jos Buttler, who holds the record at 102 sixes. Jason Roy follows Salt with 69, and Alex Hales with 63.
Most 6s by England Openers in Men's T20Is:
- 102 - Jos Buttler
- 70* - Phil Salt
- 69 - Jason Roy
- 63 - Alex Hales
Salt has been in sensational form since his IPL days. His most recent T20I heroics came against Ireland in September, where he smashed 89 off just 46 balls. In the IPL, he impressed for RCB hitting 22 sixes from his 13 matches while maintaining a strike rate of 175.98 and an average of 33.58.
Salt screams dominance at the top
The North Wales-born 29-year-old has become a key figure at the top of England’s batting order, helping his team build strong foundations in the powerplay. Proving this fact, Salt has only batted nine times at No. 2 and twice at No. 3, highlighting the team's trust in him as an opener. Originally more interested in football, Salt has now established himself as a destructive force in both international and franchise cricket.
Speaking of the ongoing match, England is in a commanding position, scoring over 70 runs in seven overs. Though opener Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell have departed, Salt and Harry Brook remain at the crease, anchoring England’s innings against New Zealand.
