Shreyas Iyer, the Indian batter, suffered a freak rib injury during the third ODI against Australia on Saturday. The incident occurred when Iyer took a brilliant running catch to dismiss Alex Carey, but in the process, he fell awkwardly on his left rib cage, which caused severe damage to him and he was admitted to the ICU.

The scans later revealed that Iyer suffered from a laceration injury to his spleen, and he was operated on immediately, as the batter is now out of danger. The spleen, which is situated on the left side got ruptured, and the batter could be out of the game for a considerable period.

In the game of cricket, such injuries don’t happen every day, and in this piece, we will jot down a list of cricket players who have suffered freak injuries on a cricket field, like Iyer.

1) Phil Hughes (neck injury - resulting in death)

Perhaps the most talked-about incident on a cricket field involves the late Australian cricketer, Phil Hughes. During a Sheffield Shield match, Hughes was hit by the ball on the neck by Sean Abbott. This led to a vertebral artery dissection, which eventually led to a brain hemorrhage, and the Australian passed away a couple of days later.

2) Raman Lamba (head injury - resulting in death)

Raman Lamba, the Indian cricketer, was fielding at short leg in a league match in Dhaka, but surprisingly, he was not wearing a helmet for protection. He was ferociously struck by the batter on the head as the fielder walked away unfazed, but Lamba had already suffered internal injuries and he died three days later due to an internal hemorrhage.

3) Jason Gillespie (broken leg)

In a Test match against Sri Lanka, Gillespie ran for a catch and collided with Steve Waugh. While Gillespie broke his leg and was carried off on a stretcher, Waugh suffered a broken nose in a freakish on-field accident.

4) Mark Boucher (eye injury)

In a tour game against Somerset, South African wicket-keeper, Mark Boucher suffered an eye injury as he was hit by the bails. He was standing close to the wicket when Imran Tahir was bowling, and it caused severe damage to his eyes.

His retina was safe, but his pupil and iris got damaged as the player had to retire from all forms of cricket.

5) Nari Contractor (broken skull)

The fearless Indian opener was hit on his skull by a bouncer from the West Indies pacer, Charlie Griffith. The batter suffered a skull fracture as he went into a coma, and some of his teammates even donated blood to save his life.
