India got off to a commanding start in the first Test against England at Headingley, ending Day 1 at 359/3, thanks to a sublime century by captain Shubman Gill and crucial contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant. The young Indian side showcased maturity and intent, taking full advantage of the surface after being put into bat by England skipper Ben Stokes.

Indian openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal putting together a fluent 91-run partnership. Jaiswal took the attack to the English seamers, while Rahul played the anchor role. However, England struck back just before lunch with two wickets.
Rahul was the first to fall, caught behind off Chris Woakes. The joy doubled moments later when debutant B Sai Sudharsan, playing his first Test, was trapped LBW for a duck in just four balls.
After lunch, Gill and Jaiswal took charge. Jaiswal continued his impressive form, notching up a well-deserved century. However, shortly after tea, Ben Stokes produced a timely breakthrough by dismissing Jaiswal for a brilliant 105. At the other end, Shubman Gill played arguably one of his finest Test innings to date. Joining him late in the day was vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who looked in great touch from the outset.
India will look to push past the 500-run mark on Day 2. With Gill settled and Pant going strong and Ravindra Jadeja still to come, the visitors are firmly in the driver’s seat.
