Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill made history on June 20, 2025, when they both struck centuries on Day 1 of the first Test between India and England, played at Headingley, Leeds. By doing so, the pair became part of an elite group of Indian batsmen who have achieved centuries on the opening day of a foreign Test tour.

India’s new era of Test cricket under Gill's captaincy kicked off on a high note. After losing the toss, the visitors were asked to bat first, and opener Jaiswal stitched a dominant opening partnership of 91 runs with KL Rahul.

Jaiswal-Gill Shine On Day 1 Of Leeds Test Vs England

Yashasvi Jaiswal, despite getting hit on the body and struggling with cramps, brought up a hundred. He scored 101 off 159 balls before Ben Stokes cleaned him up.

However, England’s miseries only increased as captain Shubman Gill walked at no.4 to make a statement. On his captaincy debut for the India Test team, Gill smashed a century off just 140 balls. He remained unbeaten on 127 as stumps were called on day 1.

Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill became only the third Indian pair to hit twin centuries on day 1 of an overseas tour.

Two Indian batters scoring 100s on the first day of a tour:

  • Sachin Tendulkar & Virender Sehwag vs South Africa in Bloemfontein, 2001
  • Shikhar Dhawan Dhawan & Cheteshwar Pujara vs Sri Lanka in Galle, 2017
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal & Shubman Gill vs England in Headingley, 2025

This has only happened twice before in Indian cricket history. The first time was back in 2001 when Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag scored hundreds against South Africa in Bloemfontein. Sehwag made his Test debut in that match, and both players gave India a strong start to the series.

The second instance occurred in 2017 when India toured Sri Lanka. Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara smashed centuries on Day 1 in Galle, which paved the way for a resounding Indian performance in the series.

Now, in 2025, Jaiswal and Gill rose to the occasion. Jaiswal carried on his incredible form with a smooth hundred, while Gill, in his first game as Test captain, played maturely and confidently to complete his three figures. Together, they helped India post a commanding total of 359/3 by stumps on Day 1.
