Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made a dream start to his Test career in England by scoring a brilliant century on Day 1 of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. It was his first Test on English soil, and he made it count in style. Jaiswal reached his hundred in just 144 balls, making him the first Indian opener to score a century at this venue.

After India lost two quick wickets early on, Jaiswal teamed up with captain Shubman Gill and the pair completely turned the game around. Together, they stitched a solid 129-run partnership for the third wicket, lifting India from a shaky 92/2 to a strong 221/2.

By the end of the day, India stood tall at 359/3. Jaiswal scored a classy 101, hitting 16 boundaries and a six. Gill stayed unbeaten on 127, showing great form in his first Test as captain.

Jaiswal Speaks After Historic Hundred In England

The BCCI shared a heartwarming video where wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel is seen chatting with Jaiswal after his knock. In the clip, Dhruv says,

"You played your first Test in the West Indies - scored a hundred. First Test in Australia - a hundred. Now first Test in England - a hundred, where batting is the toughest. What's your mindset?"

Jaiswal, smiling, responds:

"Whenever I come here, I just want to give my best for my team and my country. I really enjoy practising alone and preparing myself. I try to make sure every ball I face in practice helps me when I'm in tough situations. You know this too that there are so many moments when we're under pressure."

Gill, on the other hand, reached his sixth Test hundred with a beautiful cover drive and also crossed the 2,000-run milestone in Test cricket. Jaiswal’s century was his third against England overall and first in England.

Vice-captain Rishabh Pant also contributed with an unbeaten 65, helping India go past 350 with ease. For England, only Ben Stokes (2/43) and Brydon Carse (who dismissed KL Rahul) had anything to celebrate.

This performance marked India’s best Day 1 total in a Test match played in England, breaking their previous record of 338/7 at Edgbaston in 2022.
