Australia made short work of a huge English total at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series on September 19.

Here’s the timeline of how ENG vs AUS panned out in Nottingham:

ENG vs AUS Highlights: England Recover With Duckett, Jacks 50s After Early Wicket

Australian debutant Ben Dwarshuis earned his maiden ODI wicket inside the opening powerplay by cleaning up English opener Phil Salt. Fellow opening batter Ben Duckett subsequently collaborated with number three Will Jacks to take England past the 150-run mark at a brisk pace.

The two cricketers shared 120 runs together before Jacks (62 off 56) was out caught by Steve Smith off Adam Zampa at 168-2 around the halfway stage of the innings.

ENG vs AUS Highlights: Labuschagne Leads Australian Spin Party To Restrict ENG

Ben Duckett shared 45 additional runs with interim captain Harry Brook (39 off 31) before both were caught-and-bowled in quick succession by Australia’s unlikely spin hero Marnus Labuschagne. Duckett ended up missing out on his century at 95 and his dismissal triggered a late Australian fightback in the backend of the innings.

Adam Zampa added Brydon Carse and dangerman Liam Livingstone to his tally to claim figures of 3-49, while Labuschagne got Jofra Archer holed out at point to claim career-best ODI figures of 3-39. Fellow part-time spinner Travis Head (2-34) mopped up the English tail in the final over to conclude the hosts innings at 315.

ENG vs AUS Highlights: Travis Head Levels English Attack With Lively Partnerships

English seamer Matthew Potts delivered the early breakthrough for his team by removing Australian captain Mitchell Marsh for just 10. Marsh’s dismissal seems to have made no impact on his opening partner Travis Head, as the belligerent left-hander shared ultra-aggressive 50-plus stands with Steve Smith (32 off 28) and Cameron Green (32 off 32) for the next two wickets.

Smith’s soft dismissal to Liam Livingstone and Green’s clean-up job from Jacob Bethell left Australia at 169-3 in 26.1 overs.

ENG vs AUS Highlights: Travis Head, Labuschagne Make Short Work Of English Total

Forming forces at 169-3 at the halfway stage, Travis Head and newcomer Marnus Labuschagne deprived the Englishmen off another wicket for the rest of the game as the two cricketers shared an unbroken 148-run partnership.

Head went on to shape his career-best ODI score by smacking 154 unbeaten runs from just 129 balls with 20 boundaries and five sixes. Labuschagne, who took three wickets with the ball, belted a swift 61-ball 77* and glittered his knock with seven boundaries and a couple of maximums.

Their collective batting diligence steered Australia to a seven-wicket win with six overs to spare. With a 1-0 lead in the pocket, Australia will now cross paths with hosts England in the second ODI on September 21 at Leeds.
