Devdutt Padikkal achieves massive record in VHT [Source: @ImTanujSingh/x.com]
Devdutt Padikkal has been the player to watch out for in this edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He had scored four hundreds in the first five innings and now scored another 90 against Rajasthan to add to his tally. This performance has also earned him a massive record that no other player has achieved.
With his 91-run knock against Rajasthan, he completed 600 runs in the current edition. Devdutt Padikkal has previously scored 600 runs in two other seasons, and no other player has done that in the history of the tournament. He became the first player in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy to score 600-plus runs in three different editions.
Devdutt Padikkal has been ruling the Vijay Hazare Trophy
He made his List A debut for Karnataka in 2018 and has established a firm control over it. The left-hander scored 609 runs in 11 innings in only his second season in the 2019-20 edition. Padikkal then continued that sensational form with 737 runs in eight innings in the 2020-21 edition, which saw him score four consecutive centuries.
In the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, the Karnataka batter has scored 605 runs in six innings, averaging 100.83, including four centuries and a half-century. In the match against Rajasthan, he built a solid opening partnership with Mayank Agarwal worth 184 runs.
Padikkal missed out on a golden opportunity to score his fifth century
The 26-year-old missed out on a great chance to score his fifth century in five innings. However, thanks to the openers’ efforts, the team got into a good position early on in the game.
With just one more game left in the group stage, Devdutt Padikkal will look to continue that form to further strengthen his case for a place in India’s ODI team. He now has 13 centuries in 34 innings in VHT and is only behind Maharashtra’s Ankeet Bawane (15 in 99 matches) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (14 in 57 matches).
The Karnataka batter makes a strong case to be in India’s ODI team
Padikkal, with his impressive and consistent performances in one-day games, has made a very solid case for his inclusion in the Indian ODI team. He averages 83.62 across 38 List-A innings, the highest by any batter who has aggregated at least 2000 runs in the format.
Despite his recent performances, he was ignored for the ODI leg against New Zealand. And it does not seem likely that he will be able to break into the Indian setup any time soon. The team is gearing up for the 2027 World Cup, and the competition for the top order is immense.
With legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having a firm hold over their places in the team, many young players are still waiting in the wings. Apart from Devdutt Padikkal, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad also do not have a fixed spot in the team. All these players will be eager to make it to the team when the opportunity arises.
