Rohit Sharma smacked a splendid half-century to lead India’s early recovery on the first morning of the third Test match against England. By the time of the lunch break, the dashing opener had already bashed eight boundaries to reach 52* from just 74 balls.

Indian captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma lost partner Yashasvi Jaiswal and number three Shubman Gill to Mark Wood’s brilliance with the new ball. Rajat Patidar, playing just the second Test of his career, was removed by visiting spinner Tom Hartley as India descended further to 33-3 by the end of nine overs.

Sharma took up the subsequent run-scoring charge alongside comeback man Ravindra Jadeja for the fourth wicket. The two cricketers shared an unbeaten 60-run partnership by the time of lunch break to extend India’s total to 93-3.

Sharma himself took the attack to the English bowlers with eight free-flowing boundaries, including a thumping drive off James Anderson and a scorching pull off Tom Hartley.

Earlier in the day, captain Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal, fresh from his match-winning double ton, managed to tally just a run-a-ball 10 while Rajat Patidar was knocked over by Hartley for five. Much like Jaiswal, Shubman Gill also failed to replicate his Vizag heroics as he was dismissed for a duck by Mark Wood.

The ongoing Test at Rajkot’s Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium marks the third of the ongoing five-match series between India and the visiting England team.
