Pat Cummins is a genius in Test cricket, not only as a captain but also as the leader of the Australian pace attack. Arguably Australia's best Test bowler, Cummins etched his name in the history books on Thursday as he went past Indian pacer, Jasprit Bumrah to become the leading wicket-taker in WTC cycle, 2023-25
At the start of the WTC final at Lord's Cummins had 73 wickets, while Bumrah stood at the top with 77 scalps to his name. However, the big match-winner produced a stellar show and grabbed a 5-wicket haul to go past Bumrah in the illustrious list.
His teammate, Mitch Starc sits at the third position in the table with 74 wickets to his name in the current WTC cycle. The Proteas team were at the top before the Aussie captain decided to take matters into his own hands as he destroyed their batting lineup.
Most wickets in WTC cycle 2023-25
Player | Wickets Taken | Average |
Pat Cummins | 79* | 23.33 |
Jasprit Bumrah | 77 | 15.09 |
Mitch Starc | 74 | 27.05 |
Nathan Lyon | 66 | 24.18 |
R Ashwin | 63 | 24.55 |
The right-arm pacer has led the team from the front in this cycle as he has 79 wickets to his name with an average of 23.33. He also took a fifer in the finale to rattle the Proteas batters.
Despite being pushed down to the number two spot, Jasprit Bumrah has the best average (15.09), amongst all the bowlers in the list as he had a stellar Test journey in the current WTC cycle. Cummins' teammate, Starc occupies the third spot with 74 wickets and in the second innings he, too, has a chance to surpass Bumrah.
Nathan Lyon sits at the 4th spot with 66 wickets and India's R Ashwin, who retired from Tests, earlier this year occupies the 5th spot.
Cummins becomes 8th Aussie to 300 Test wickets
Not only Bumrah's record, Cummins also entered another illustrious group by scalping 300 wickets in Test cricket. He became the 8th Australian to achieve this landmark, with Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Nathan Lyon, Mitch Starc, Dennis Lillee, Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee ahead of him. He reached the landmark in his 68th Test match.
