Sri Lanka Women edged out Bangladesh in a tense low-scoring thriller to register their first win of the 2025 Women’s World Cup. Captain and legendary all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu delivered some tight overs at the business end of the Bangladeshi innings, after smearing a quick knock at the top of the order early in the game.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the 21st match of the 2025 Women’s World Cup between Sri Lanka Women and Bangladesh Women, as it panned out at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Monday, October 20.
Shorna Akter takes 3, dries up runs for SL in final 20 overs
Marufa Akter jolted Sri Lanka off the first ball with the wicket of opening batter Vishmi Gunaratne for a duck. Captain Chamari Athapaththu and number three Hasini Perera overcame Sri Lanka’s early setback with a 72-run partnership for the second wicket. Athapaththu scored a brisk 46 off 43, while Perera top-scored in the innings with a regal 85 before both cricketers were trapped in front by Rabeya Khan and Shorna Akter respectively.
However, none of their other batters managed to sustain Athapaththu and Perera’s early momentum, as Bangladesh bowlers strangled down Sri Lanka batters in the final 20 overs. Despite reaching a commendable 155-4 in 29 overs, Sri Lanka folded up for just 202 in 48.4 overs, with only Nilakshika Silva chipping in with a run-a-ball 37 in the backend of the innings.
For Bangladesh Women, Shorna Akter conceded just 27 off her 10 overs and picked up three huge wickets. Rabeya Khan claimed figures of 2-39 while Marufa Akter, Nishita Akter Nishi and Nahida Akter chipped in with a wicket each.
Bangladesh choke under pressure in small chase
Courtesy of Udeshika Prabodhani (1-29), Sugandika Kumari and a runout, Bangladesh Women slipped to 44-3 in 15.3 overs in their run-chase. Sharmin Akhter and captain Nigar Sultana fought back for Bangladesh by scoring cunning half-centuries, with the latter cracking 77 off 98 balls.
Despite attaining full control by reaching 176-3 in 45 overs, at a time when they required just 27 runs from the remaining 30 deliveries, Bangladesh managed to drag themselves to just 195-9. Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu tilted the tide back in her team’s favour by claiming figures of 4-42, which including three wickets in the final decisive over. Sugandika also claimed a wicket in the penultimate over to finish with 2-38 as Sri Lanka clinched a thrilling seven-run win.
