Team India demolished Sri Lanka Women to start off the 2025 Women’s World Cup with a comprehensive win after an extensive rain delay. Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana as well as Amanjot Kaur put forth sensational all-round displays, while Harleen Deol and opener Pratika Rawal notched up crucial runs with the bat to counter Sri Lanka’s spin maestro Inoka Ranaweera.

Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the opening match of the 2025 Women’s World Cup between India Women and Sri Lanka Women, as it panned out at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday, September 30.

50s for Deepti, Amanjot take IND to 269 despite Ranaweera’s four

Sri Lanka pacer Udeshika Prabodhani (2-55) struck early for her team with the all-important wicket of prolific Indian opener Smriti Mandhana for just eight. Mandhana’s opening partner Pratika Rawal composed 37 runs off 59 balls and shared a steady 67-run stand with number three Harleen Deol, who cracked 48 with six elegant boundaries. Both cricketers were eventually dismissed by senior Sri Lanka spinner Inoka Ranaweera within the space of her single spell. Ranaweera also deceived Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues in succession to claim figures of 4-46 as the hosts slipped to a precarious 124-6 around the halfway stage of the innings.

Deepti Sharma (53 off 53) and Amanjot Kaur (57 off 56) rescued India’s faltering ship with blistering half-centuries and crafted a match-defining 103-run partnership. Sneh Rana blasted 28* off just 15 balls to provide finishing touches to the innings as India mounted a monumental 269-8 in a 47-over rain-curtailed outing.

Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana and Charani bowl out SL for 211

Sri Lanka started off confidently with a 43-run knock from senior opener and captain Chamari Athapaththu. Harshitha Samarawickrama also chipped in with 29 at number three to share a 52-run stand with her skipper. However, both Athapaththu and Samarawickrama were dismissed in quick succession by Deepti Sharma and Shree Charani, allowing fellow Indian bowlers to scythe through Sri Lanka’s middle-order.

Nilakshika Silva at number six resisted for a while with a quick 35-run knock, but Sri Lanka folded up for just 211 in 45.4 overs to fall 59 runs (DLS method) short of their 271-run target. For India, Deepti Sharma unfurled the spell of the innings with figures of 3-54, while Sneh Rana and Charani chipped in with two wickets apiece. Amanjot Kaur also picked up a wicket after scoring a half-century to cap a remarkable all-round performance for herself alongside Deepti and Rana.
