Here, we take a look at the highlights of the 12th match of the Women's World Cup between England Women and Sri Lanka Women, as it unfolded at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt's influential century leads England to 253
In Colombo, the Sri Lankan side won the toss and put the English women's side in to bat, as they had a decent start. Amy Jones fell for just 11, whereas opener Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight batted decently. Beaumont scored 32, while Knight went on to score 29.
However, the major difficult period came for Sri Lanka when opposition skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt scored a fluent 117, off exactly 117 deliveries, with nine boundaries and two maximums.
Some contribution from the middle order helped the England women post 253 runs on the board after the conclusion of the 50 overs. Inoka Ranaweera picked up 3 crucial wickets for 32 runs, while Udeshika Prabodhini and Sugandika Kumari grabbed two apiece.
Sophie Ecclestone's four-fer helps England fold Sri Lanka for 164
Chasing 254 for victory, the Sri Lanka side had a decent start as well, before losing their skipper, Chamari Athapaththu, who went out with cramps. However, the one-down batter, Vishmi Gunaratne, came in and couldn't do much, as Sri Lanka lost their first wicket for 37.
Following this, Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama formed a decent partnership, taking Sri Lanka to 95 by the end of 20 overs. After which, Perera departed for 35. Later, Samarawickrama also went back for 33, while Sri Lankan skipper Athapaththu returned to the crease, only to be knocked over by Sophie Ecclestone for just 15.
Subsequently, apart from Nilakshi de Silva's 23 and Anusha Sanjeevani, who scored 10, no other batter got into double figures, as Sri Lanka lost their last five wickets rather quickly.
From 134 for 5, they were cleaned up for just 164 in the end, in just 45.4 overs, as they lost the game by a mammoth margin of 89 runs. Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone grabbed outstanding figures of 4 for 17 in 10 overs, while Nat Sciver-Brunt and Charlotte Dean grabbed two each to their name.
England women again displayed their dominance, with both bat and ball in hand, as they achieved their third consecutive win in this World Cup 2025 and now go to the top of the table with 6 points.
