On Thursday, the West Indies outplayed South Africa by 28 runs at Sabina Park, Kingston in the first of the three T20I series ahead of the much anticipated T20 World Cup.

In the absence of their full-strength squads, both sides were led by stand-in captains for the series. Brendon King led the Caribbeans in his home ground in the absence of Rovman Powell while Rassie van der Dussen took charge of the proteas in place of Aiden Markram as the two sides prepare for the upcoming mega event in the USA and the Caribbean.

On winning the toss, the hosts were put in to bat first by the visitors, Ottneil Baartman and Ryan Rickelton were handed over their debut caps for them and Shamar Joseph also made his first T20I appearance for the WI.

King, the homeboy got them off to a good start alongside Kyle Mayers, scoring 64 runs at the loss of a solitary wicket in the powerplay. The two stitched a partnership of 79 (44) before the captain fell for a 45-ball-79 to Andile Phehlukwayo's slower one.

Mayers and Roston Chase guided them to 175/8 in their 20 while Baartman the SA debutant had a good outing, foxing 3 for 26 in his four. Phehlukwayo ended up with a three-fer as well, letting WI score only 60 runs in the last 9 overs.

During the run chase, Quinton de Kock continued his poor run of form as he fell on the second ball after hitting a four on the first. Debutant Rickelton failed to have an impact as well after his 6 (7). Reeza Hendricks tried to steady the ship with Matthew Breetzke and Captain van der Dussen, adding 24 (18) and 42 (33) with them respectively.

Reeza Hendricks held on to an end, scoring a fighting 87 (51), however, the African side bundled out for 147 after continuous wickets from the other end. Matthew Forde took three wickets while dismissing Hendricks before finishing the game with a pinpoint yorker in the blockhole to Baartman.

Gudakesh Motie bowled fantastically well in the middle overs, ending with 3/25 in his four overs, including a 'dream delivery' to Bjorn Fortuin.

Captain King was named player of the match for his effort with the bat and accurate bowling changes as the Caribbean side recorded their biggest win in terms of margin against the Proteas.
