Out-of-favour Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up eight wickets in an innings for Uttar Pradesh in their Elite Group B Ranji Trophy 2024 match against Bengal. The speedster, making his return to first-class cricket after six years through the game, registered his career-best figures in the process and finished with an astonishing innings haul of 8-41 from 22 overs.

Bhuvneshwar's spell folded up Bengal for 188 in 58.2 overs after Uttar Pradesh managed just 60 runs in their first innings on the opening day at Kanpur's Green Park.

After Uttar Pradesh folded up for just 60 within the opening day of the match, Bhuvneshwar Kumar single-handedly blew away half of Bengal's batting line-up by stumps.

The cricketer accounted for each of Bengal's first five wickets as they finished their Day 1 at 95-5. Kumar added three more wickets to his tally to extinguish Bengal's first innings at 188 by the following afternoon.

Finishing with figures of 8-41 from 22 overs, Bhuvneshwar Kumar marked the best bowling performance of his first-class career. Interestingly, he made his comeback to the format through this game, considering he previously featured in a red-ball match back in January 2018 during India's three-match Test tour of South Africa.

His match-defining spell also marked the 13th five-wicket haul of his first-class career and the first time ever that he took more than six wickets in an innings.

Bhuvneshwar's new-ball teammate and IPL star Yash Dayal accounted for the remaining two wickets of Bengal's innings to help Uttar Pradesh keep their halfway deficit down to 128 runs. Earlier in the game, Uttar Pradesh batters were bundled out for 60 in just 20.5 overs.
