The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to resume on Saturday, May 17, following a temporary suspension due to the escalating border conflict between India and Pakistan. The high-octane clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium marks the league’s much-anticipated return to action.
However, even before the resumption, RCB has been dealt a significant blow as their in-form captain, Rajat Patidar, faced injury. The star player sustained a finger injury during their last fixture against CSK just before the league's suspension.
Mo Bobat Provides Injury Update On Rajat Patidar
However it is important to note that RCB Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, provided a positive update on his recovery during the pre-match press conference. He added that Patidar has resumed batting in practice and is showing promising signs of recovery.
“Rajat’s going well. He had an injury to his hand, but he’s been building up ever so slowly. For him, probably the disruption (halting of IPL because of Indo-Pak border tension) gave a few more days to get through that early healing, for the swelling to go down, and for him to get used to picking up a bat again. He’s practised the last few days, and he’s going well,” Bobat stated during the pre-match press conference.
It is important to mention that the 31-year-old has emerged as a important player in RCB’s middle order this season. He has scored 239 runs in 11 matches with the strike-rate of 140.59.
If Rajat Patidar Misses Out, Who Will Captain RCB?
In case Patidar is unable to take the field against KKR or is sidelined for a longer duration, the team will need to appoint a new skipper. Former captain Virat Kohli is the frontrunner to take the reins, having previously led the franchise till the end of the 2021 season.
Another name in contention is Jitesh Sharma. The wicketkeeper-batter, who was in line to captain RCB against LSG before the league’s suspension, brings leadership experience from his stint as Punjab Kings’ vice-captain last season. The team management could consider him and let Kohli solely focus on his batting.
RCB currently sit second on the IPL 2025 points table with 16 points from 11 games, including eight wins and a net run rate (NRR) of +0.482.
