Glenn Phillips takes four in 85-over opening day

Bangladesh opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy utilized spin-friendly conditions to his advantage by employing counter-attacking approach within the first two sessions of the day. The 23-year-old right-hander produced 86 free-flowing runs and glittered his knock with 11 sparkling boundaries.

Emerging as Bangladesh’s lone half-centurion from the opening day, Joy formed crucial partnerships with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque after losing his partner Zakir Hasan to a peach from Ajaz Patel early in the innings.

Captain Shanto and number four Mominul both scored 37 runs each from their ends before the two cricketers were dismissed by New Zealand’s part-timer Glenn Phillips. The right-arm Kiwi off-spinner snared two more Bangladeshi victims towards the closing stages of the day to lead his side’s fightback against the hosts.

After Bangladesh reached a commanding 180-2 at the brink of Tea, New Zealand spinners Ajaz Patel, Ish Sodhi and part-timer Phillips himself came up clutch at several crucial junctures, with fast bowler Kyle Jamieson also chipping in with two lower-order scalps.

The hosts soon found themselves at a danger of being bowled out at 290-9 before final-wicket pair Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam held on to guide them till stumps. The two cricketers smacked four combined boundaries en route to their successful survival as Bangladesh reached a competitive 310-9 from 85 overs.
