Australia pipped South Africa in a tense finish in Darwin to start off their home series on a winning note. Tim David exploded with the bat while senior paceman Josh Hazlewood hogged the limelight with the ball in big Australian win.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the first T20I of the three-match series, as it panned out at the Marrara Oval in Darwin on Sunday, August 10.
Tim David, Maphaka Trade Blows In Big Australian Innings
Kagiso Rabada (2-29) struck early for South Africa with the wickets of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh off his successive deliveries. George Linde trapped Josh Inglis while Lungi Ngidi (1-34) and Senuran Muthusamy (1-24) got the better of Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell respectively as Australia slipped to a precarious 75-6 at one stage of the innings, even though Green muscled his way to a blistering 35 off just 13 balls.
Tim David lifted up the tottering Australian innings with an enterprising 83 from 52 balls with four fours and eight huge sixes. His crucial partnerships with Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis soared Australia past the 150-run mark and eventually towards a competitive 178 at the end of 20 overs. For South Africa, young Kwena Maphaka cleaned up the Australian tail to bag sensational figures of 4-20.
Josh Hazlewood Crashes Rickelton Party
Josh Hazlewood started off Australia’s defense with the big wicket of South Africa captain Aiden Markram in the first over. Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis toppled Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Dewald Brevis respectively as the Proteas reached a sluggish powerplay score of 48-3.
Ryan Rickelton smeared a domineering fifty and shared a 72-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs to tilt the tide back in South Africa’s favor. However, Hazlewood removed Stubbs and George Linde in quick succession, and Adam Zampa (2-33) struck twice in one over as Australia assumed evitable superiority in the game.
Rickelton cracked 71 off 55 balls to extend the match up until the final over, where fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis delivered the knockout blow to the visitors with two wickets to finish with 3-26. Hazlewood also bagged sensational figures of 3-27 as Australia won by 17 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
