The second game of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 sees a classic trans-Tasman rivalry as Australia Women (AUS-W) take on New Zealand Women (NZ-W) at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Wednesday, October 1. The exicting match will start at 3:00 PM IST and both sides will be looking to kick off their campaign with a statement win.

Australia Women

Defending champions Australia Women, led by Alyssa Healy, enter the tournament as favourites despite losing their only warm-up match against England by four wickets. The batting unit looks formidable with Healy, Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney forming the top order. The all-round department is loaded with the likes of Annabel Sutherland, Tahlia McGrath and Ashleigh Gardner.

Bowling remains Australia’s biggest strength. Megan Schutt will lead the pace attack, backed by Kim Garth and Darcie Brown while the spin trio of Alana King, Georgia Wareham and Sophie Molineux will look to control the middle overs. The Aussies will be eager to stamp their authority early.

New Zealand Women

New Zealand Women, captained by Sophie Devine, had a dismal build-up after losing both their warm-up matches against India. Their batting will rely heavily on the experience of Suzie Bates and Devine with Georgia Plimmer, Amelia Kerr, Brooke Halliday and Maddy Green forming the core of the middle order.

The White Ferns’ bowling attack has variety with Jess Kerr, Roemary Mair, Bree Illing and Lea Tahuhu in pace while Amelia Kerr and Eden Carson will be key spin options. For New Zealand to challenge Australia, they will need early breakthroughs and consistency in the middle overs.

AUS-W vs NZ-W head-to-head overview

Australia Women and New Zealand Women have clashed in 135 ODIs. The Aussies have dominated with 102 wins while the White Ferns have secured 31 victories. Two games have ended in no result.

Holkar Cricket Stadium pitch report

The Holkar Cricket Stadium pitch is known for being batting-friendly. The ball comes nicely onto the bat, allowing stroke-makers to thrive. Pacers will enjoy some swing with the new ball, but as the ball ages, slower deliveries and variations become crucial. Spinners will need accuracy to succeed here. Given the history, teams batting first have had more success so the toss-winning captain is likely to bat first.
