Rachin Ravindra suffered a facial injury [Source: @BLACKCAPS/x.com]
New Zealand allrounder Rachin Ravindra just can’t seem to catch a break in 2025. The young star, who has already had his fair share of injury scares this year, suffered another facial blow during training on Tuesday, September 30.
With the much-anticipated three-match T20I series against Australia set to begin on October 1 at Bay Oval, Ravindra’s untimely knock has once again put the focus on his fitness.
Collision at training injures Ravindra
It happened in the most unlucky fashion. Rachin Ravindra was chasing down a chance near the boundary when he crashed into the advertising hoardings, suffering a facial laceration.
The New Zealand team later confirmed he had passed an initial concussion test at the ground but would continue to be monitored closely. For a player who has become such a vital cog in the Black Caps’ middle order, this injury is a tough pill to swallow.
This isn’t the first time 2025 has left Ravindra battered. Earlier in the year, in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, he was struck on the forehead while attempting a catch under the floodlights during a tri-series clash against South Africa in Lahore.
That injury not only ruled him out of the remainder of the tri-series but also forced him to miss New Zealand’s opening Champions Trophy fixture against Pakistan.
Ravindra's injury: A setback for NZ
The timing of this latest setback couldn’t be worse. New Zealand are set to face Australia in a high-profile T20I series, starting October 1 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The second and third games are lined up for October 3 and 4.
While Ravindra has technically been cleared of concussion for now, whether he takes the field in the opener will depend on how quickly the cut and bruising heal. Fans will be hoping he can shake off the knock and be ready to play against their trans-Tasman rivals.
