The first Test between Australia and West Indies ended in under three days, as Josh Hazlewood claimed a career-best haul of nine for 79 in the Adelaide encounter, helping his side claim a comfortable 10-wicket win and a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Day three began with the West Indies still trailing Australia by 22 runs and had four wickets in hand, they tried their level best to take the lead and avoid an innings defeat.

Alzarri Joseph did smack a few fours off Mitchell Starc early on but found himself running off partners as the bowler got rid of Joshua Da Silva first up for 18.

Starc soon, had Joseph also back in the hut for a 30-ball 16. Hazlewood, who has been bowling maidens after maiden's finally got his first wicket of the morning in the form of Gudakesh Motie, who got bowled over for 3.

Kemar Roach and debutant Shamar Joseph added a short 26-run stand for the ninth wicket, which ensured that Australia had to bat the second time as well. 

Hazlewood claimed his fifth and the 10th wicket of the match, getting the better of Joseph, who got stumped, that gave the Australian pacer his career-best Test haul.

Needing 26 to win, Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja came out to bat and almost took Australia past the finish line before Shamar's bouncer hit the latter, who had to walk back and retired hurt for 9.

Marnus Labuschagne joined Smith and scored the one run needed for Australia to claim the Test and go 1 up in the two-match series. 

Earlier, in the Test, Day 1 witnessed West Indies fall like a pack of cards, folding for 188, where Hazlewood shined picking up 4 for 44. On Day 2 Travis Head starred for Australia, slamming a match-winning 119, where Shamar almost put the home side into slumber with his maiden Test five-wicket haul.

The second Test will be played on January 25 in Brisbane, which will be a day/night contest.
