What a game we have had! South Africa hold their nerves to maintain their unbeaten run in the ongoing tournament and qualify for the semi-finals as Group 2 winners! They beat the co-hosts West Indies by 3 wickets in a rain-curtailed thriller at Antigua and squash the dreams of the Rovman Powell-led side. 

Earlier in the game, South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl first. An excellent bowling performance from the Proteas restricted the Windies to 135/8 in 20 overs. While Marco Jansen removed the man in form Shai Hope for a golden duck in the opening over, skipper Aiden Markram had the better of the dangerous Nicholas Pooran in the next over on 1 off 3 balls to push the two-time World Cup winners on the back foot.

Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase rebuilt the innings with an 81-run partnership for the third wicket, with South Africa deciding to continue with the spinners. Mayers (35 off 34) wasn’t looking like middling, while Chase (52 off 42) played the way he plays, scoring his only 2nd T20I half-century. From 86/2, West Indies crumbled big time, with South Africa picking up scalps at regular intervals. Only Andre Russell (15 off 9) and Alzarri Joseph (11* off 7) got into double figures apart from Mayers and Chase, with Dre-Russ getting run out in an unfortunate turn of events, courtesy of a direct hit from Anrich Nortje.

For South Africa, Markram bowled all four overs in one spell and finished with figures of 1/28. Keshav Maharaj (1/24) and Tabraiz Shamsi (3/27) chipped in with economical overs, with the latter being the best pick of the bowlers. Jansen (1/17) didn’t bowl after colliding with Kagiso Rabada (1/11) in the first phase of the innings, while the latter got his first over in the 18th over, which was a surprise in itself. In another surprise, Nortje (0/26) went wicketless to end his run of at least a wicket in 16 consecutive T20 WC matches. 

Quinton de Kock started the chase with a bang, hammering Akeal Hosein for three boundaries in the first over. Russell pulled things back in the next over and dismissed both openers in the same over, reducing Proteas to 15/2 before the rain halted the proceedings for more than an hour. Eventually, the chase was curtailed down to 17 overs, with South Africa requiring 123 to win the game and top Group 2.

Tristan Stubbs saw his classy batting partners - Markram (18 off 15) and Heinrich Klaasen (22 off 10) - get undone by the extra pace and bounce of Alzarri Joseph. Both were looking good and hit a few cracking shots, with Klaasen taking a particular liking of Gudakesh Motie, hitting him for 3 fours and 1 six.

The dream is over for the Windies. Great shot from Marco Jansen as he takes South Africa into the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. Heartbreak for the West Indies players as they get knocked out of the World Cup.

The bat turns in his hands and he skies it in the mid off region. Mayers settles under this and pouches it safely with a reverse cup.

At the other end, a few groundsmen are working hard to dry the run-up area with a huge block of sponge. A couple of them jump on the sponge and try to soak in as much as water possible.

Another quick grazing around the outfield from the two umpires. Again, they meet Daren Sammy and have a chat. Kruger van Wyk, one of the Proteas support staff, has a word with the two umpires. We are getting closer to losing overs! Just about 10 minutes away from it.

Two wickets in the over for Dre Russ. Both the South African openers are back in the hut and Dre Russ is absolutely pumped up. That's what they needed while defending this total. Russell bends his back and bangs it short on the body, de Kock sits back and goes for the pull but is hurried by the pace. He gets it off the upper half of the bat and hits it straight down the throat of Rutherford at deep backward square leg who takes a simple catch.

Hendricks looks to flick it but misses. Pooran behind the stumps collects it and goes up straightaway but the umpire is not interested. The replays are in and there is a spike when the ball is close to the bat. A big spike in fact. Excellent review from Powell and the Windies have their first. Hendricks departs on a golden duck.

So, we are back!!! South Africa need 136 to ensure their berth in the Semis. It could be a challenging task given the quality of spinners at the disposal of West Indies. However, they will hope that their openers Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks give them a good start to lay the foundation for the chase.

A brilliant bowling display by the Proteas as they restricted the mighty West Indies to 135/8 in 20 overs. West Indies looked good after the powerplay but failed to sustain the momentum for a long in the latter half of the innings. 

After being invited to bat first, West Indies lost Shai Hope for a golden duck in the opening over of the match, with Jansen drawing the first blood for the Proteas. Markram shared the new ball from the other end with two left-handed batters on the crease and the gamble worked for the Protea skipper as he trapped Pooran for a mere one run in the second over of the innings. 

Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase started the rescue mission and managed to steady the ship for a while but failed to convert it into a big score, as Mayers departed for 35 runs off 34 balls. Chase notched up his fifty but he too failed to convert it into a big score. 

Following the wicket of both set batters, West Indies lost wickets in clusters, which included the wicket of on-song batter, Andre Russell, who departed for 15 runs off 9 runs, courtesy of a direct hit from Nortje from short third man. 

Alzarri Joseph's unbeaten 11 runs at the cue end of the innings helped West Indies cross the 130-run mark. 

Each of the six South African bowlers, barring Anrich Nortje, picked up at least a wicket. Tabraiz Shamsi was the standout bowler for them. He spun a web around the Windies’ batters and registered figures of 3/27 in his four overs. It’s a below-par total from the West Indies and they will have to be at their absolute best to defend this total successfully.

Remember, the winner of tonight’s clash will qualify for the semi-finals. Don’t go anywhere as the chase begins shortly.

Over the wicket, full on the middle stump. 82.4 kmph slower through the air stuff from Shamsi. Chase is down on one knee looking to go big in the leg side with a slog sweep. Fails to get the timing right and miscues it off the top edge. Flies in the air but straight down the throat of KG Rabada at long-on taking a simple catch. An excellent innings from Chase comes to an end. But he would be disappointed with this one, failing to stay till the end.

Shamsi strikes again!!!!! Shamsi picks up his second. Markram with a good low catch at first slip. He claims the catch and starts celebrating straightaway. However, the umpires converge and send it upstairs to check for a clean catch. It's a fair delivery to start. The replays are in and looks like Markram has held it cleanly. He has his fingers underneath the ball and the third umpire is ready with the decision. OUT displayed on the big screen.

WHAT A BEAUTY!!!! Maharaja has stunned Powell here. West Indies once again losing the momentum here. Tossed up delivery at the off stump line. It was cricket of the highest quality from all ends.

West Indies played brilliant cricket in the group stage of the tournament. They managed to win all the matches and make into the Super Eights. But in the first game of the Super Eights, West Indies suffered a big defeat against England. 

However, West Indies recovered fast and won the match against the USA by a significant margin and brought themselves back into the race for the semi-finals. Now, they stand at the cusp of elimination or a spot in the semis. They will need to defeat South Africa to find a place in the top four. If they manage to win this game by 52 runs or more they will make into the Super 8s as the group topppers.
