The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently made significant changes to the daily allowances paid to its office bearers during foreign tours and within India.

As per a recent report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the BCCI has hiked the daily allowances for office bearers, which includes the president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and joint-secretary, during foreign tours. The office bearers will now be entitled to a daily allowance of $1000 (approximately Rs 82,000), as compared to the previous allowance of $750 per day, which was in effect for the past seven years.

The increment, which has been in effect since October 2022, was discussed during the Apex Council meeting held on Sunday, April 9, 2023. Along with the lavish daily allowance, the office bearers are entitled to relish first-class air travel and book a luxurious suite room both on domestic and overseas trips.

Moreover, office bearers will be awarded a daily allowance of Rs 40,000 for meetings within India and a per diem of Rs 30,000 for work travel. In fact, the allowance of the Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman has also been included in the office-bearers' category.

Additionally, the members of the BCCI Apex Council, which includes two representatives from the Indian Cricketers' Association, will receive a daily allowance of Rs 40,000 for quarterly meetings and $500 per day for foreign tours.

It is essential to emphasize that a BCCI office bearer's post is honorary, and therefore, the CEO of BCCI will receive to a daily allowance of $650 on foreign tours and Rs 15,000 per day within India.

The BCCI is one of the wealthiest sports bodies globally, however, its reputation has been marred by the growing debate over the unequal distribution of profits to players. A recent analysis by The Telegraph, London, has exposed the truth about the IPL’s profit-sharing model, revealing that players receive a measly 18% of the league's profits.

In stark contrast, major sporting events such as the English Premier League share 71% of their profits with the players, while the baseball league dishes out 54% of the revenue to the players. Meanwhile, the basketball and ice hockey leagues allocate an equitable 50% each. Overall, the glaring disparity in profit-sharing between the BCCI and other leagues is likely to spark a debate about fair compensation for players.
