India have played their last match of 2025, with the series against South Africa having concluded. They will play their next game against New Zealand next year. India had a busy year in white-ball cricket, having played major ODI and T20I tournaments.

They began their year with a white-ball series against England in January and February, completely dominating the visitors. They defeated England 4-1 in the series and proved why they are the best T20 side in the world. The best part was not just one or two players, but most of the squad members delivered to help win the series.

Varun Chakravarthy, with 14 wickets in five games, including a five-for, and Abhishek Sharma, with 279 runs, including a fifty and a century, were definitely the stars of the series. This performance propelled them to the number one rankings in both bowling and batting in T20Is, respectively. Apart from them, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Shivam Dube also delivered good performances.

Dominating the Asia Cup 2025

After a long gap in the shortest format, India returned to T20 cricket in September and faced the challenge of playing a multi-team tournament: the Asia Cup 2025. But once again, they went undefeated in the Intercontinental Cup.

They faced arch-rivals Pakistan in the group stages and completely dominated them, winning the low-scoring game by seven wickets and over four overs to spare. They once again faced the Men in Green in the Super 4 stages and continued their dominance, with Abhishek Sharma emerging as the game changer for India.

They then defeated Bangladesh and Sri Lanka comfortably to make it to the final, where they met Pakistan yet again. Despite setting a target of just 147, Pakistan got off to a great start in the second innings, dismissing India’s top 3 for just 20 runs in four overs.

It was up to Tilak Varma to rebuild the innings, which he did in his steady knock of 69 runs in 53 balls. Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube also played small cameos, but it was Tilak who emerged as the star of the night. Even Rinku Singh got a moment to shine as he finished the game with a four on the only ball he faced in the entire tournament.

Turbulent tour of Australia and dominance vs South Africa

Shubman Gill was named the T20I vice captain just ahead of the Asia Cup, but this decision meant Yashasvi Jaiswal had to be dropped from the squad, and Sanju Samson could not find a spot in the Playing XI. The situation only worsened after Gill could only manage the highest score of 46 in five outings against Australia.

Even though India managed to win the series 2-1, there were some concerns over their performance. Gill’s place in the team over Jaiswal and Samson was questioned; Suryakumar Yadav’s form also remained a big worry.

Then came the T20I series against South Africa, where the regular performers gave it their all, but Gill and Sky still could not deliver. The vice captain was dropped for the last match due to a niggle, and Samson got the much-deserved opportunity to prove his worth. And he did that with a quick-fire knock of 37 runs in 22 balls, helping India win the series 3-1.

India’s road to T20 World Cup title defence

Immediately after the series against South Africa concluded, the BCCI announced the squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. To everyone’s surprise, and relief to the fans, Shubman Gill was dropped from the team, and Axar Patel was named the vice captain. Even Ishan Kishan, who had an outstanding SMAT season, was recalled to the side.

But the team captain’s form still remains a big concern. He did not score a single fifty in 2025, but he remains hopeful of getting back among the runs in the next few weeks. The Men in Blue will next face New Zealand in a five-match series, starting on the 21st of January.
