Gukesh Dommaraju, or as he is commonly known, D Gukesh, has done the impossible by beating China's Ding Liren in the finals of the World Chess Championship 2024 in the 14th round in Singapore.

With this, he now becomes the youngest grandmaster in the world to earn the title to his name at 18 years, 8 months and 14 days. It all happened when the match was moving towards another draw and would have resumed on Friday with a tie-break. However, Ding, all of a sudden, made an error, seeing which Gukesh pounced on the opportunity and defeated the Chinese star with an ultimate move that saw him becoming the champion.

After being crowned the champion, Gukesh broke the record of Garry Kasparov, who won the title at 22 years, 6 months and 27 days. With this, he also became the second world champion from India, after the legendary Viswanathan Anand, who earned the championship title four times during his career.

Indian Cricketing Fraternity Laud Gukesh On X

The greatest Indian cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar, wasted no time in wishing the youngest world champion Gukesh on X (formerly Twitter) as he wrote,

"In a game of 64 squares, you've opened a world of endless possibilities. Congratulations, @DGukesh, on becoming the 18th World Champion at just 18! Following in Vishy’s footsteps, you're now guiding the next wave of Indian chess prodigies."

No. 1 T20I all-rounder Hardik Pandya too praised the youngster from his social media account.

Former India cricketers VVS Laxman, Robin Uthappa, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag alongside experienced Ajinkya Rahane too didn't miss the chance and expressed their emotions.

To those who don't know, Gukesh qualified for the Chess World Championship after lifting the Candidates tournament trophy early this year.
