There might be only a handful of Indian fans who don't know about MS Dhoni's biopic. Sachin Tendulkar's is lesser known but is a work of craft that enmeshed biopic with documentary. After these two legends, the Bolly Town is echoing rumours of having Sourav Ganguly's biopic.

Currently, the much-anticipated biopic of Sourav 'Maharaj' Ganguly, has been making headlines as the project gains momentum. Speculation about who would take on the role of the iconic cricketer has kept fans and the film fraternity abuzz. 

Rajkumar Rao Set To Wear Ganguly's Hat

Reports now suggest that acclaimed actor Rajkumar Rao has been finalized to play Ganguly in the film, produced by Luv Ranjan under the banner of Luv Films. Initially, Ayushmann Khurrana was rumoured to be cast in the biopic. Other names, including Ranbir Kapoor and Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee, were also floated as potential candidates. However, no official confirmation came from the production team. 

Now, according to updates from a noted journalist of Anandabazar Patrika, Sumit Ghosh, Rajkumar Rao is set to step into Ganguly's shoes, bringing his own charm to the character.

Rajkumar Rao, known for his versatile acting skills, has garnered critical acclaim for his performances across diverse genres. His most recent biographical role was in Srikanth (2024), a Hindi-language film based on the life of Srikanth Bolla, a visually impaired entrepreneur. 

Directed by Tushar Hiranandani, Srikanth depicted Bolla’s inspiring journey as the founder of Bollant Industries and was praised for its compelling narrative and Rao’s heartfelt performance. Hence, the actor’s ability to embody real-life characters with authenticity can justify Ganguly's role.

Sourav Ganguly, affectionately known as 'Dada', is one of the most influential figures in Indian cricket. His illustrious career spans several milestones, including leading the Indian team to victory in the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and the final of the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup. Ganguly’s aggressive captaincy style and ability to back young talent transformed Indian cricket, earning him the nickname “The Maharaja of Indian Cricket.”

Ganguly’s journey from a privileged upbringing in Kolkata to becoming one of India’s most successful cricket captains is filled with inspiring anecdotes. His struggles with initial rejection, his historic debut century at Lord’s, and his memorable shirt-waving celebration at the 2002 NatWest Series final are moments etched in cricketing history. 

The biopic is expected to highlight these significant events, along with his tenure as the President of the BCCI, showcasing his contributions to the sport both on and off the field. Though no official confirmations have been sent yet, assuming Rajkumar Rao as the actor, the film promises to be an inspiring tribute to one of Indian cricket’s greatest icons.
