The two-time Olympic medallist and reigning World Champion in javelin, Neeraj Chopra, named Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah as the cricketer most suited to take up javelin throw and not, as many expected, the supremely fit Virat Kohli or the ever-dependable MS Dhoni.

The revelation came during a special segment aired on Star Sports, hosted by former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, where Chopra was asked which Indian cricketer could have excelled in his sport. While fans and pundits expected Chopra To pick Kohli known for his unmatched fitness, and agility, the Olympic gold medallist surprised everyone with his unexpected but reasoned choice.

"I think it would be a fast bowler for sure. So, I think a fully fit Jasprit Bumrah will be good at it," Chopra said on Star Sports.

Why Bumrah? Neeraj’s Logical Take

It is important to mention that Chopra clinched gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and followed it up with a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Games. He explained that fast bowlers possess all the qualities needed to excel in the javelin. According to him, bowlers like Bumrah exhibit explosive strength, body coordination, momentum control- all vital for a successful javelin thrower.

Interestingly, Chopra’s praise comes at a time when Jasprit Bumrah is again making headlines for his fiery performance with the red ball. During India’s recent Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, Bumrah picked up a phenomenal five-wicket haul in the first innings.

Although India lost the Test by five wickets, largely due to lack of bowling support at the other end in the second innings, Bumrah’s performance stood out. His fifer helped him achieve a new milestone the most five-wicket hauls by an Indian bowler in England. With this, Bumrah equalled Kapil Dev’s record of 12 five-wicket hauls in overseas Tests.

It is also worth mentioning that according to several reports, Bumrah may miss the second Test and will be given rest due to his workload management.
