In a move that has raised eyebrows, Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya sparked outrage after blaming Australian women cricketers for the recent molestation incident in Indore. His comments came right after two Aussie players were allegedly harassed by a motorcyclist while walking to a café last week.
A shocking take from the minister
Instead of calling out the culprit or tightening safety measures, Vijayvargiya decided to point fingers at the victims themselves.
“See, a lapse has definitely happened. But the Australian women cricketers left from the hotel without informing anyone, not even their head coach. This was their fault,” the Urban Development and Housing Minister told NDTV.
He didn’t stop there. He went on to say,
“They had the security staff there — both personal and policemen. But the cricketers just went out of the team hotel while gossiping, and that’s why this incident happened.”
Police, BCCI and MPCA step in
According to Rajesh Dandotiya, Additional DCP (Indore Crime Branch), the accused: Aqeel, a known offender, was arrested within six hours. “We carried out an intensive operation and caught the culprit,” he confirmed.
The BCCI, through secretary Devajit Saikia, condemned the act and said it would “reflect on its safety protocols if necessary.”
The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) also issued a statement apologizing to the Australian team and expressing deep regret.
But Vijayvargiya’s words didn’t sit well with many, as his comments appeared to shift the blame onto the victims.
“Other cricketers will learn a lesson,” says Vijayvargiya
Even after widespread criticism, the minister doubled down, saying the episode should be taken as a “lesson.”
“The incident is unfortunate. And other cricketers will also learn a lesson that when they are in another city or another country, they must themselves be concerned about their own security and well-being,” he said.
That statement has left many fuming, with fans and activists saying it’s not the players’ responsibility to ensure safety, it’s the system’s.
Australia move on despite the shock
Despite the disturbing episode, Australia Women haven’t let it affect their campaign. The defending champions continue to top the Women’s World Cup 2025 points table and are now gearing up for the semi-final clash against India on October 30 in Navi Mumbai. South Africa will take on England in the other semi-final in Guwahati.
