Pratika Rawal gets injured during India vs Bangladesh WC match [Source: AFP]
India’s women’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, has given an update on the condition of opening batter Pratika Rawal ahead of the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 semi-final against Australia. On Sunday, Pratika injured her ankle while fielding in India’s last league match against Bangladesh. She twisted her right ankle at deep midwicket while trying to stop a boundary on a damp outfield at DY Patil Stadium.
Because of the injury, Pratika did not open the innings in that game. Instead, Amanjot Kaur was sent to bat alongside Smriti Mandhana. However, the match was eventually abandoned due to continuous rain, giving India some extra recovery time before the knockout stage.
Speaking to the media, Harmanpreet confirmed that Pratika’s injury is being closely watched by the team’s medical staff.
"Pratika is being monitored by the medical team and hopefully they'll (medical team) get back soon. It's a very important game for us (semifinal), we have played very good cricket in the league matches and everyone has contributed which we'll carry forward," said Harmanpreet.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also released a statement regarding Pratika’s condition. It stated,
"The BCCI Medical Team is closely monitoring her progress," the board said in a statement.
Notably, Pratika has been one of India’s most consistent performers in this World Cup. She has scored 308 runs in six innings at an impressive average of 51.33, including a brilliant century against New Zealand in Navi Mumbai.
If Pratika doesn’t recover in time for the semi-final, India might have to look at possible replacements such as Uma Chetry, Radha Yadav, or Amanjot Kaur. However, apart from Chetry, none of them have experience opening the innings at the international or domestic level.
Losing Pratika would be a big setback for India, especially as they face the unbeaten Australian side in a crucial knockout clash.
