The Indian team registered a close win over South Africa in the first ODI of the series in Ranchi. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul played vital roles with the bat, while Harshit Rana and Kuldeep Yadav’s efforts with the ball helped them secure the win despite the away team’s late surge.
After the win, the Indian team was seen celebrating in the team hotel. India’s stand-in skipper KL Rahul cut the cake, while the rest of the team clapped around him. The hotel staff even called for Kohli to stay back, but the star cricketer just applauded and walked away.
This win was special not just because India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, but because they bounced back after a horrifying effort in the recently completed Test series. The Indian team had faced a whitewash at the hands of the Proteas in the two-match series.
Kohli and Kuldeep’s masterclass helped India win the match
Meanwhile, Rohit and Kohli put on a solid 136-run partnership for the first wicket after being asked to bat first. The two showcased why they are the best in the business and played a steady knock. They never looked in a hurry and always kept the innings in control.
While Rohit was dismissed shortly after scoring a fifty, Kohli went on to complete his 52nd ODI century, extending his lead as the highest-century scorer in the format. His efforts, combined with KL’s fifty, helped India register a massive target of 350 runs for South Africa to chase down.
In the chase, the visitors did not get the best start, losing a few early wickets, courtesy of Harshit Rana. But their middle order helped them bounce back brilliantly, and the attack was led by Matthew Breetzke, Marco Jansen, and Corbin Bosh.
All of their efforts almost took away the game from India, but Kuldeep Yadav’s brilliance kept them at bay. He took four wickets, including those of Breetzke and Jansen, to help India bounce back and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
