Rohit Sharma displayed his ODI mastery with a brisk half-century against South Africa in the series opener, and Irfan Pathan, India's former all-rounder, was all praise for his fitness game and level of commitment.

Rohit Sharma, who has focused on fitness and weight loss, recently regained the top spot in the ICC rankings. During the match in Ranchi, he hit three sixes to surpass Shahid Afridi's record for the most sixes in ODI history and virtually shut down critics who wanted his retirement.

Irfan Pathan praises Rohit Sharma's peak fitness

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Irfan Pathan praised Rohit's current form and fitness while lauding that he is ageing backwards.

"As for Rohit Sharma, he seems to be at his peak. It doesn’t look like he is 38, he has improved his fitness. But the way he is playing according to the conditions and batting flawlessly, the half-century only shows with what mindset he is moving forward," Pathan said on his YouTube channel.

Pathan also expressed his admiration for Rohit's ability to bounce back after an early chance almost got him off the ground.

"It feels extremely good seeing how these two players are progressing. Rohit was dropped once off Nandre Burger’s bowling but he batted exceptionally – whether it be playing on the up or pull shot," Pathan stated.

Rohit-Kohli shut down retirement talks

The seasoned duo of Rohit and Kohli, through their commanding partnership, effectively quieted any speculation about their commitment to future ODI campaigns, including the 2027 World Cup.

While India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak shut down any noise about Kohli's retirement talks in ODIs, Rohit's record-breaking hitting and consistent performances continue to highlight his passion for the game and the contributions he wants to make for the team.

Nevertheless, the duo will once again be in the spotlight in a couple of days as India prepares for the 2nd ODI against South Africa on December 3 at Raipur.
