The Indian cricket team is off to Australia, but before the flight took off, it was all smiles, hugs and a hint of nostalgia at the Delhi airport. As the Shubman Gill-led ODI squad departed for the white-ball tour Down Under, BCCI dropped a behind-the-scenes video that instantly lit up social media and for good reason.
The first meeting after the captaincy switch
The clip captured the first real interaction between Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma since the ODI captaincy handover. And it also showed a heartwarming moment between Rohit and Virat Kohli, which reminded fans of the bond that has stood the test of time.
The video begins with a sweet moment as Shubman Gill walks up to Rohit Sharma, gently places his hand on the senior’s back. Rohit turned around with his trademark grin, greeted Gill with a warm “Kya haal hai bhai”, and the two shared a brief hug.
For fans, that single gesture said it all: respect, transition and the unspoken bond between the old guard and the next-gen leader. No awkwardness, no tension, just a smooth handover of leadership energy as India gets ready for a big overseas challenge.
Rohit and Virat’s hug lights up social media
As the team boarded the bus, another frame stole the limelight. Rohit entered and spotted Virat Kohli sitting by the window. Kohli immediately stood up, the two hugged, smiled and shared a light-hearted exchange.
Soon after, Gill walked in, shook hands with Kohli and received a friendly pat on the back. Even Shreyas Iyer, now Gill’s deputy, joined in, as the mood inside the team bus stayed light and cheerful.
For fans used to dissecting every handshake and smile between India’s senior pros, this moment was pure gold and filled with camaraderie.
The big tour ahead
The team’s journey began from Delhi and will end in Perth, where the first ODI takes place on October 19, followed by matches on October 23 and 25. After the ODIs, India will play a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8.
The AUS vs IND ODI series marks the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to international cricket after almost eight months. Both had retired from Tests earlier this year and last played for India during the Champions Trophy win. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and selector Ajit Agarkar have both suggested that the duo’s future in ODIs will be assessed “one series at a time.”
Meanwhile, as the Men in Blue land in Perth, they will carry not just their kits and strategies but also the kind of togetherness that turns good teams into great ones. The real action begins on the field, but the chemistry has already started working off it.
