Pakistan had a memorable outing in the first Test against South Africa, registering a clinical 93-run win at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Their emphatic victory helped Pakistan open their account in the World Test Championship points table and also go past India in the standings.

Pakistan's win pushes India to 4th in WTC standings

Recently, India thrashed the West Indies by seven wickets, adding crucial WTC points to their tally. Their victory over the Caribbean Men helped India narrow down the gap with the second-placed Sri Lanka.

However, just one day after India consolidated their third position, Pakistan's win over South Africa pushed them down to the fourth spot in the standings. Meanwhile, the Shan Masood-led side claimed the second position, with Sri Lanka moving down to the third spot.

Why are Pakistan placed second while India have more WTC points?

It's worth mentioning that India have 52 points in their kitty, having won four out of their seven matches. Meanwhile, Pakistan have just 12 points with one win in the current WTC cycle. Yet, Pakistan are placed second, with India claiming the fourth position in the standings.

For the unversed, the ICC WTC points table is not calculated based on raw points. Instead, the ICC takes the percentage of points to rank the participating teams in the chronological sequence.

In this case, India have a score of 52 out of 84 points, the maximum number they would've gotten had they won all matches in the WTC cycle. On the other hand, Pakistan have twelve points after one match, recording a PCT of 100.

How is the PCT calculated?

The formula to calculate the PCT in WTC is,

Percentage of points in WTC = (Points earned/maximum points) * 100.

Applying this formula, India have a PCT of 61.90, while Australia and Pakistan have a PCT of 100, having won all matches that they have played in the WTC 2025-27 cycle. Similarly, Sri Lanka, a team with 16 points in two matches (24 is the maximum points they could've got had they won both games), is placed third with a PCT of 66.67.

Conclusion

While Pakistan currently claims the second position, their PCT will be reduced to 50 if they lose the next match. On the other hand, the upcoming home series against South Africa provides India a golden opportunity to boost their PCT and move up in the WTC standings.
