Former Olympic medallist and India boxing icon Vijender Singh has stirred a storm on social media after indirectly questioning the age of IPL's latest teenage sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
In a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter), he hinted at possible age fraud in cricket, just days after the 14-year-old smashed a blistering 35-ball century for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans.
Vijender Singh Raises Question On Suryavanshi’s Age
“Bhai aaj kal umar choti ker ke cricket me bhe khelne lage (Have players have started reducing their age in cricket too?)," asked the Olympic Games bronze medallist Vijender.
Suryavanshi, who became the youngest player in IPL history to score a century, has taken the 2025 season by storm. His hundred has earned widespread praise from cricket legends and fans. However, it also triggered about the authenticity of his age, a problem that has long plagued Indian sports.
However, it is important to mention that while there is currently no evidence suggesting any wrongdoing by Suryavanshi.
What Is Age- Fraud?
Age fraud is the manipulation or misrepresentation of a player’s age to gain advantage. This has been a recurring issue in Indian cricket and other sports as well. Earlier several other cricketer have also been banned by BCCI for age-fraud. Few notable names include Rasikh Salam, Manjot Kalra and Nitish Rana.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Inspiring Journey
Suryavanshi’s rise has been inspiring. He was picked by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.1 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction in Dubai. After been given an opportunity to play this season, the young left-hander made an instant impact by smashing a six off the first ball he faced in his debut match against Lucknow Super Giants on April 19. His century in just his third match elevated him to national fame.
