Aussie Legend David Boon Retires As ICC Referee After Record-Breaking Stint

Australian cricket legend David Boon has retired from his 14-year role as an ICC match referee, concluding with Bangladesh’s dominant Test win over Zimbabwe in Chattogram. The 64-year-old officiated 389 international matches—surpassing his 12-year playing career, during which he scored 13,386 runs, including 26 centuries. 

Renowned for Boon's resilience as a No.3 batter and memorable performances like his 1989 double-century against New Zealand, Boon will now join Cricket Australia’s board after earlier roles as a national selector and referee.

Jay Shah Acknowledges Boon's Contributions

Taking to his official twitter handle, ICC Chairperson Jay Shah lauded Boon’s legacy, emphasizing his impartiality and dedication.

"On behalf of the @ICC, I extend my gratitude to David Boon for his outstanding service as an ICC match referee. His professionalism and integrity have set a benchmark for match officials across our sport and we wish him success in his next role as Board Director at @CricketAus." 

Boon On His Retirement & New Journey

Reflecting on his retirement, Boon described the moment as "surreal." and elaborated on his new journey too.

"I’ve traveled the world in cricket roles since I was 16—now it’s time to go home." He acknowledged challenges in modern officiating, particularly regarding pace of play. "I’m not sure about the overrates... Pace can be an issue."

Boon also stressed unity in cricket administration, "Every nation must operate under a collective umbrella, not individual agendas." He expressed gratitude to the ICC and Cricket Australia, calling his journey "an incredible honour" and hoping his contributions left a lasting impact on the sport.
