The last few months have been rough for Zimbabwe, who failed to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and then botched a chance to secure a spot in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and United States of America, scheduled next year.

Following the poor run, head coach and former Zimbabwe captain Dave Houghton has stepped down from his post with immediate effect as stated by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC).

After finishing third spot in the Africa Region Qualifier, Houghton explained that Zimbabwe needed a new voice in the dressing room, having witnessed a breakdown in relationship with players.

In a statement, ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani thanked Doughton for his services and hoped that Zimbabwe builds on the groundwork laid by the former great.

Here's what Mukuhlani said

"While the past few months have been disappointing as we failed to qualify for both the 50-over World Cup and the T20 World Cup, they should not obscure all the work he (Houghton) has done over the past year to rebuild the foundations for long-term success. Dave leaves the team with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts and we are looking forward to working with him in a different role as we seek to change our on-field fortunes."

Houghton, 66, took over from former coach Lalchand Rajput in June 2022, who move on to become technical director. Interestingly, ZC stated that Houghton will continue to work with the board in an undisclosed role moving forward.

The board will soon form an interim technical team for Zimbabwe's limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka, which gets underway next month.
