On Wednesday, July 2, India will lock horns with England in the second Test of the five-match series at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The visitors trail 0-1 in the series after a defeat in the first Test.
It was a mixed match for Team India, as the top-order batters performed well, but the lower middle-order crumbled under pressure. It was also a game of ups and downs for Yashasvi Jaiswal—the left-handed batter smashed a century in the first innings but had a terrible day in the field, dropping four catches.
Jaiswal Eyes Gavaskar's Record
Speaking of Jaiswal, the 23-year-old is eyeing a massive feat when he faces England in the second Test: he has set his sights on becoming the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs.
Notably, Jaiswal, who has played 20 matches, has 1,903 runs to his name. The 23-year-old is just 97 runs away from surpassing legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s record of reaching 2,000 Test runs in 23 matches. Yashasvi has two Tests to break the record and could also equal it in the fourth Test.
Jaiswal Also Looks to Stun Sehwag and Rahul Dravid
While Gavaskar holds the record for the fastest to 2,000 Test runs in terms of matches, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag are the fastest to reach the milestone in terms of fewest innings. Notably, Dravid and Sehwag took just 40 innings, while Jaiswal has 1,903 runs in 38 innings. If he scores 97 runs in the upcoming Edgbaston Test, he will either break or equal the record for the fastest to 2,000 Test runs by innings.
How Did Jaiswal Perform in the First Test?
Jaiswal, who has 1,903 runs in 20 Tests at an average of 52.86, including five centuries and 10 fifties, was a standout in the first Test. He scored 134 runs off 178 balls in the first innings but managed just four in the second innings.
