South African opener Quinton de Kock smacked 114 runs from nearly a run-a-ball against New Zealand in Pune to notch up his fourth century of the 2023 World Cup, and the 21st of his glittering ODI career.

The cricketer smoked three sixes and 10 boundaries in his 116-ball stay at the crease, and shared 200 runs with number three and fellow centurion Rassie van der Dussen to lead South Africa’s recovery after Temba Bavuma’s early dismissal.

Remarkably, through the course of his knock, Quinton de Kock managed to upstage Rohit Sharma for a huge batting record, once deemed unthinkable by many purists of the sport.

Quinton de Kock soars past Rohit Sharma

Dashing opening batsman Quinton de Kock landed 114 punches against New Zealand in Pune to extend his World Cup 2023 tally to 545 runs. The innings marked his fourth century of the tournament, and the cricketer achieved the same in just seven innings for South Africa.

Interestingly, Quinton de Kock has now recorded the highest number of runs after the first seven innings of a single World Cup edition, going past Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma and his 2019 run-fest.

Sharma listed 544 runs from his first seven World Cup 2019 innings for India across several England venues, during which he tallied hundreds against South Africa, Pakistan, England and Bangladesh. The Indian opener eventually concluded his 2019 crusade with 648 runs, glittered with five centuries to his name, also a world record for a single edition.

Quinton de Kock, on the other hand, has now recorded 545 runs from his first seven innings of the 2023 edition in India, also with four centuries to his name up until this point. The South African batting veteran might well catch up on Sharma’s all-time century record in a single edition as well, considering he is just one short of the Indian legend’s 2019 tally of five tons.
