India’s tearaway speedster Mohammed Shami ravaged England’s famed batting line-up in their latest World Cup 2023 faceoff in Lucknow. The cricketer claimed three key wickets in the middle overs, and eventually finished with match-winning figures of 4-22 from his seven overs.

Through the course of his latest bowling spectacle, Shami levelled up with Australian pace legend Mitchell Starc for a huge World Cup record.

Mohammed Shami joins Starc for this record

Mohammed Shami snared four key English wickets, including that Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow in succession to finish with figures of 4-22 from his seven overs. His latest match-winning spell marked the 13th occasion where the cricketer had claimed four or more wickets in an ODI innings.

Remarkably, Shami has registered six of such figures at the World Cup stage. The Bengal speedster made his World Cup debut in the 2015 event in Australia, and has so far collected 40 wickets across three different editions from just 13 matches.

Out of his 13 outings, the Indian pace legend has snared four or more wickets in six World Cup matches, thus bringing him on levelling terms with Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc for the all-time record.

Interestingly, Starc claimed six four-fers from 24 World Cup matches while Shami achieved the feat 11 innings quicker than the burly Australian paceman. While the two share the top World Cup podium among bowlers with most four-fers to their name, here is a look at top five bowling stars who feature in the elite list.

Mohammed Shami made his World Cup 2023 debut with a match against New Zealand, and the pacer celebrated the occasion with a scintillating five-wicket haul. Having collected nine wickets from just two games this tournament, one can expect the team management to back the speedster over Mohammed Siraj in the coming matches.

Team India will now face Sri Lanka for their subsequent World Cup 2023 challenge on November 2. The much-awaited contest will be played out at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
