World Cup 2023 | Iceland Cricket Mocks Bangladesh After Angelo Mathews Timed Out

Cricket Iceland, known for their humorous takes on global cricketing affairs, recently took a dig at the Bangladesh team for ‘timing-out’ Angelo Mathews in their recent World Cup 2023 fixture.

The incident occurred during the Sri Lankan innings earlier in the contest when middle-order veteran Mathews failed to arrive at the crease within the stipulated time. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed against his delay, which eventually led to the batsman's dismissal without even facing a delivery.

While the rules indicate that a batter can be adjudged out upon failure to reach the crease on time, a legion of fans across the web questioned Shakib over his sportsmanship, claiming that the Bangladeshi captain should have pardoned Mathews considering the Sri Lankan veteran had brought a broken helmet to the middle.

Cricket Iceland trolls Bangladesh

Mere moments after Angelo Mathews' controversial dismissal in the 2023 World Cup, Cricket Iceland took to X (formerly Twitter) and trolled the Bangladesh cricket team for not adhering to the spirit of the game.

The cricket board shared a picture of a vodka bottle alongside a fake replica of an Ashes trophy and stated that they had found Bangladesh's 'spirit of cricket'. The caption reads:

“We've found the Bangladeshi spirit of cricket located in a dark place behind our Volcanic Ashes trophy.”

Angelo Mathews' eventual departure worsened Sri Lanka's batting troubles at 135-5 before Charith Asalanka charted a near run-a-ball century during the backend of the innings. The cricketer's efforts stretched the Sri Lankan total to a competitive 279 in 49.3 overs in their must-win game of the 2023 World Cup.
