The cricket world saw something for the first time on the field when Bangladesh took on Sri Lanka in an epic World Cup clash at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. A batsman was ‘timed out’ for not facing his first delivery within the given time, and it was Angelo Mathews who was at the receiving end.
However, had Shakib Al Hasan not appealed for it, Mathews would have been there in the middle, rather than returning to the pavilion without facing a delivery.
It all happened when Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama, which brought Mathews into the crease. Just before the Sri Lankan all-rounder was ready to face, he felt his helmet was not right.
Hence, he asked to change it, and by the time he was about to be ready, the given three minutes were up. Shakib appealed for a timed out.
Mathews was not too happy about it, and even showed his helmet to Shakib, but the latter was unmoved, and hence, the veteran Sri Lankan player had to leave the field with anger.
In spite of many feeling that Shakib made a clever move given the context of the game, many felt that it was against the spirit of cricket, and Shakib again sparked a controversy.
Here Are Some of the reactions after Angelo Mathews Out
Needless to say, this dismissal of Mathews will be the talk of the town in cricket world for some time now.
