'Absolutely Pathetic'- Gautam Gambhir  Condemns Mathews' Timed Out Dismissal

On Monday, the cricket fraternity witnessed a bizarre yet historic event, as veteran Sri Lankan player Angelo Mathews became the first-ever batter to be timed out in international cricket. After arriving at the crease, the experienced all-rounder took a long time to take his guard, as he had some issue with his helmet.

However, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for timed out, with the umpire eventually declaring Mathews out despite the batter pleading to decide otherwise.

While the incident had divided opinions on social media, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir slammed Bangladesh for violating the spirit of the game.

Taking to his official account on X (formerly Twitter), Gambhir termed the incident a pathetic one, writing,

"Absolutely pathetic what happened in Delhi today! #AngeloMathews"

Mathews also expressed his disappointment on getting timed out, explaining his situation animatedly to the Lankan staff.

However, after Mathews got out, explosive southpaw Charith Asalanka steadied the ship for Sri Lanka through a scintillating hundred. Before getting out, the batter struck six fours and five sixes for a glorious 105-ball 108.

Riding on Asalanka's batting masterclass, Sri Lanka were bowled out for a respectable 279-run total in 49.3 overs.
