The first edition of the Women’s Premier League was played in March 2023. Five teams were formed in the WPL '23: Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Giants, Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women is owned by United Spirits with squad strength of 18 players (Indian-12, Overseas-6). In the WPL auction, star India batter Smriti Mandhana emerged as the most expensive bid for RCB. Priced at a base of INR 50 lakhs, Mandhana was acquired by the franchise for a whopping INR 3.4 crore. 

She was appointed as their captain, a role she will continue in this as well season. The RCB team owners signed only two players for more than INR 30 lakh each. Their most expensive signing was Ekta Bisht, whom they roped in for INR 60 lakh. The second most expensive signing made by the RCB franchise was that of Georgia Wareham. She is a talented all-rounder from Australia, and to acquire her services, the Bangalore-based franchise spent INR 40 lakh at the auction.

Mumbai Indians (MI) women's franchise had a successful Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023. The Mumbai Indians team lifted the silverware in the inaugural edition as they beat DC women's in the finals.

Mumbai Indians went into the 2024 auction with a purse of ₹2.1 crore available to them. They had 5 slots to fill, and picked up as many players. The most significant pick for Mumbai proved to Shabnim Ismail. The South African pacer was added to the Mumbai Indians squad for ₹1.20 crore.

The UP Warriorz bolstered their Indian batting contingent by splashing the cash on uncapped player Vrinda Dinesh. The Karnataka top-order batter was sold for INR 1.3 crore. She is one of the costliest players in the UP Warriorz squad. The UP Warriorz obtained the services of Danni Wyatt for INR 30 lakhs in the WPL 2024 auction to complete their overseas quota.

They finished third after the league stage of the inaugural edition of the WPL in 2023, before losing to the eventual winners, the Mumbai Indians, in the eliminator.

Delhi Capitals (DC) women's franchise ended up as the finalists of the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) edition. The squad, led by Meg Lanning, finished the WPL 2023 points table as the league-leaders but lost in the finals against Mumbai Indians (MI) women's.

Delhi Capitals Women’s franchise finalized all 18 slots available at the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024. While the DC squad retained the majority of their players, they have bolstered their team with the addition of Annabel Sutherland.
