The much-awaited Test series between India and South Africa was scheduled to go on floors starting 26th December 2023 at Centurion. However, rain played spoilsport as the start of the play was delayed due to a wet outfield.

The Boxing Day Test between India and South Africa was delayed by 30 odd minutes after overnight rains left water puddles in the outfield. As ground staff worked their way around, the toss took place at the sidelines as Rohit Sharma and Temba Bavuma walked out in blazers.

Rohit Sharma called heads, but it was ruled against his favour as Bavuma was asked to make his choice. The Protea chose to ball first for obvious reasons. However, Rohit wasn't disappointed as he reckoned that it was a good toss to lose since he was confused about his choice.

Jadeja Suffers Injury Scare Ahead Of Boxing Day Test

Having said that, the Indian skipper then revealed it's playing XI, and Ravindra Jadeja's omission from the same left the fans confused. Jadeja has been an excellent front end all-round for the Men in Blue in recent years, and thus, the choice of Ravichandran Ashwin over him raised many eyebrows.

However, Rohit was quick to clarify that Jadeja had missed out due to injury concerns. Apparently, the spin wizard complained of upper back spasms earlier in the morning. Moreover, after careful evaluation, the management made him unavailable for selection. The same was later confirmed by the BCCI as well.

That being said, the severity of the injury is yet unknown. Moreover, Jadeja's availability for the second and final test is also uncertain. Fans' would hope that Jadeja recovers by the time of the second test as he is an X factor, and his absence could hurt India in this series.

For now, veteran off-spinner R Ashwin will take over for Jadeja. While Jaddu's services are unmatchable, Ashwin is an experienced test player who can create a big impact for his side.

The spin wizard is the second-highest taker for India in the red ball format, which makes an ideal replacement for someone like Ravindra Jadeja.
