Team India is set to face South Africa in the first of the two Tests at Centurion, marking their 18th Boxing Day Test match. The team has experienced a positive turn of fortunes in this festive fixture, remaining unbeaten since 2014 in Tests commencing on December 26.

Despite regular tours to the Rainbow Nation since the historic 1992-93 series, India has failed to secure a Test series victory on South African soil in eight attempts, which makes the upcoming series an important one.

In the lead-up to the first Test, the BCCI released a video featuring the Indian team's preparation, with a voiceover by captain Rohit Sharma.


Notably, batting stalwart Virat Kohli returned to South Africa after a brief break for personal reasons. Engaging in an intense training session on Sunday, Kohli showcased his form in the nets. Both Kohli and Rohit, along with Jasprit Bumrah, had opted out of the T20I and ODI series against South Africa.


Selection dilemma for team India

One of the key considerations for India is the replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami, who is nursing an ankle injury. The contenders for this role are Mukesh Kumar or Prasidh Krishna, while Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are expected to be the first-choice pacers. Another selection dilemma revolves around choosing between Shardul Thakur and Ravichandran Ashwin as the second all-round option with Ravindra Jadeja.

With several players potentially on their last South African tour, and both teams incorporating fresh faces, the series promises an intriguing home vs. away storyline. The nature of the pitches guarantees minimal dull moments, adding to the entertainment factor of the Test series.

However, weather conditions may pose a challenge for an engaging match. The forecast for the first Test in Centurion indicates rain on the first two days and again on Day 4 and 5. The expected temperature during the five days will range between 20 and 24°C, with the likelihood of multiple rain interruptions throughout the game.
