In a recent IPL 2025 match between DC and MI at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, something unusual happened. When Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya walked out to bat, umpire Chris Gaffaney stopped him and checked his bat using a special bat gauge.
MI ended DC’s unbeaten run in IPL 2025 by beating them in the 29th fixture. The game was a thriller as Mumbai posted 205 runs in the first inning. Despite Karun Nair’s 89 runs stunning knock, Delhi committed costly errors in death overs to get bowled out for 193 runs.
However, during the game, an incident involving MI captain Hardik Pandya became a big talking point.
Umpires Check Hardik Pandya’s Bat Vs DC
As Hardik Pandya stepped out to bat in the first inning for Mumbai Indians, on-field umpire Chris Gaffaney checked his bat with a special gauge.
This moment went viral on social media because fans were surprised to see the umpire verify the size of the bat on the field. But it wasn't illegal or controversial, just a routine check.
Based on IPL regulations, a bat should satisfy certain size constraints like width should not exceed 4.25 inches, depth should not exceed 2.64 inches and the thickness of the edge should not be more than 1.56 inches.
Lastly, the bat must pass through a bat gauge without getting stuck. This was the third time on the same day that umpires checked a bat. Earlier, Shimron Hetmyer and Phili Salt also had their bats measured during the RR vs RCB match in Jaipur.
Even though Hardik’s bat passed the test, he couldn’t do much with it and scored just 2 runs. But he had the last laugh as his team won the game against an unbeaten side of Delhi Capitals.
With 2 victories in 6 games, Mumbai Indians have jumped to 7th place in the points table. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals maintain their second spot with 4 wins in 5 games.
