The much-awaited return of the Champions Trophy after a hiatus of eight years has been marred with controversy as BCCI and PCB are engaged in a tussle over the hosting rights. Notably, the Roger Binny-led board has refused to send India to Pakistan because of security reasons.

The BCCI is pushing for a hybrid model, while the PCB is adamant about keeping the entire tournament in Pakistan. It is a special moment for Pakistan as they are the defending champions and will host the first ICC event since the 1996 World Cup.

Talking about the 2017 Champions Trophy, was a painful one for the Indian fans as they suffered a humiliating defeat against arch-nemesis Pakistan. However, the tournament was scrapped afterwards by the ICC leaving the fans disappointed.

This article will shed light on why the ICC removed the Champions Trophy for eight years from their future tour programmes.

Why Did ICC Scrap-Off Champions Trophy In 2017

The ICC introduced the tournament in 1998 with a focus on improving the quality of sport across the globe as only associate nations were allowed to take part in the prestigious fifty-over tournament. The same was followed for two editions, but soon the full-members too joined the tournament and it became an elite ICC fifty-over event after the ODI World Cup.

Till 2006, the event was held every two years, but then the ICC, similar to the ODI World Cup, held it once in four years. Although, in 2017, the apex council of cricket decided that they wanted to continue with a single ICC tournament for a particular format, they decided to scrap the tournament.

Notably, the fans complained of two major ICC events in a fifty-over format and it made no sense. Thus, the ICC adhered to it and scrapped off the 2021 edition, before finally reintroducing it in 2025.

Talking about the upcoming edition, the BCCI and PCB will hold a meeting on November 30 to come to a conclusion.
