Why Are Punjab Kings Getting Trolled On Social Media?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Punjab Kings recently found themselves at the centre of a social media storm following their attempt at humour which backfired spectacularly.

In the aftermath of India's nail-biting win against Australia in the final T20I in Bengaluru on Sunday, the franchise took to Twitter to commend Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh's exceptional performance. However, their method of praise inadvertently sparked controversy.

Fans react to PBKS' tweet comparing Arshdeep's Singh with Shaheen Afridi

Punjab Kings' tweet, “Not against this left-arm pacer, Matthew Wade” which included a wink emoji, seemed to draw a parallel between Arshdeep's successful defense of 9 runs in the final over and a less fortunate over by Pakistani fast bowler Shaheen Afridi during the T20 World Cup 2021 semi-final against Australia.

In that infamous over, Wade hit Afridi for three consecutive sixes, snatching victory from Pakistan. The tweet implied that unlike Afridi, Arshdeep was able to withstand the pressure in a similar situation.

However, the cheeky dig didn't sit well with a large section of the cricketing community. Fans quickly took to social media to point out instances where Indian players were on the receiving end of similar situations.

Notably, they brought up the example of Australian opener Travis Head, who played a crucial role in snatching the World Cup 2023 away final from India. Others cited an occasion in 2022 when Shaheen dismissed Head for a duck in an ODI, countering Punjab Kings' insinuation with "not against this left-arm pacer."
