During the IPL 2024 Qualifier 1 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Ahmedabad, cricket fans noticed a unique change in the score graphics. Instead of the usual dots, a tree symbol appeared for every dot ball bowled.

This change is part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) green initiative in partnership with the Tata Group.

The initiative promises to plant 500 trees for every dot ball bowled during the four playoff games and the final.

This green effort was also undertaken during the IPL 2023 playoffs, where 84 dot balls in the Qualifier 1 match between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans resulted in the planting of 42,000 saplings.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah highlighted this achievement on Twitter after the game.

The appearance of tree emojis on the score graphics is a visual reminder of this commitment. The change was first noticed during the high-pressure game between KKR and SRH, leading to curiosity among viewers.

IPL broadcasters confirmed that this symbol would replace the red dots for the duration of the playoff matches, reinforcing the BCCI's environmental initiative.

Harsha Bhogle, a renowned cricket commentator, explained the change during the 2023 playoffs, linking it to the BCCI’s collaboration with the Tata Group to promote tree planting.

The initiative aims to create a positive environmental impact through the popular sport, making each dot ball count towards a greener future.
