As Delhi Capitals unveiled their playing XI for their opening clash of IPL 2024 against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on Saturday, Sumit Kumar was a name that caught everyone's attention.

The Haryana all-rounder, whose journey from domestic cricket to the grand stage of the IPL has been nothing short of spectacular, has now found himself in an arena where legends are made and dreams are either realised or broken.

IPL 2024: Who is Sumit Kumar?

The question on everyone's lips was, "Who is Sumit Kumar?" This intrigue wasn't unfounded. After all, Delhi Capitals had gone to great lengths, forking ₹1 crore from a base price of ₹20 lakh, outbidding Kolkata Knight Riders in a bidding war at the IPL 2024 auction. But what is it about Sumit that makes him such a prized catch?

Peeling back the layers, Sumit's cricketing journey reveals a talented all-rounder who likes to step up when it matters the most.

Debuting in List A cricket for Haryana in October 2019 and making a mark in the first-class circuit shortly thereafter, Sumit quickly transitioned from a promising prospect to the mainstay of his state team.

Yet, it's not the impressive tally of over 1,700 runs or the 105 wickets that fully sum up Sumit's essence. The 28-year-old all-rounder can change the course of an innings with his bat and utilise his right-arm pace to bewilder batters with both in-swing and out-swing.

Sumit's performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023, helping Haryana to their maiden title, showed his value. With 18 wickets at an enviable average of 16.78 and a decisive cameo in the final, he showcased his all-round capability, which became impossible for IPL scouts to ignore.

His brilliance isn't limited to the 50-over format. In T20 cricket, a domain where consistency is as elusive as coveted, Sumit has emerged as Haryana's leading wicket-taker since his debut in February 2019. His 43 wickets at an economy of 7.37 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy attest to his effectiveness and reliability.

Crowning his achievements, Sumit was named the Player of the Tournament in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023. His all-around performance, highlighted by 183 runs at a strike rate of 155.08 and 18 wickets at an economy rate of 4.15, not only brought him into the spotlight but also earned him the highest accolades in domestic cricket.

As Sumit Kumar dons the Delhi Capitals jersey and strives to make his mark, he carries with him not just the hopes of a franchise but the aspirations of every cricketer who dreams of making it big.
